Police have made two arrests in connection with Tuesday's fatal shooting that targeted a man sitting behind the wheel of his car in northeast Minneapolis.

Authorities say the male suspects remain jailed pending murder charges.

Family members identified the victim as Steven Markey, 39, of Plymouth. His father, Jerry Markey, said officers from Maple Grove's police department "came and knocked on my door [Tuesday] night" and broke the news.

He said they offered no further details about what they characterized to him as "an incident."

The car with a wounded Steven Markey still behind the wheel struck a building about 4:45 p.m. along Central Avenue, moments after gunfire pierced the vehicle barely a block away near Tyler Street and 14th Avenue NE., said police spokesman John Elder. One or more suspects ran from the scene on foot.

Officers performed CPR on the driver before he was taken to HCMC, where he later died.

Steven Markey worked as an office assistant for his mother and fellow attorney Chad Reichwald at their Minneapolis law firm.

Reichwald described Steven Markey as "hilarious, a good guy" who had a talent for drawing graffiti-style urban art. "He'd make you laugh in two minutes," Reichwald said.

Jerry Markey said his son grew up in Maple Grove with a brother and a sister, graduated from Osseo High School and then earned a political science degree from the University of Minnesota.

The father said he hadn't seen his son or been in touch with him for a couple of years.
