An unlicensed driver serving probation for a second drunken driving conviction is suspected of being drunk when he crashed his car in northern Minnesota and killed one of his passengers, officials said Tuesday.
The wreck, which also left the driver and three other passengers injured, occurred about 7 p.m. Saturday outside of Walker on County Road 13 near the intersection with the Stony Point Camp Road, the Cass County Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Office identified the woman who died as Mikayla Butcher, 22, of Bemidji.
The driver, Pernell Joseph Reese, 23, of Walker, Minn., was jailed and has a Tuesday afternoon hearing in District Court in connection with violating the terms of his probation. Charges connected to the fatal crash are pending.
Reese was sentenced on Sept. 10 in Cass County to four years' probation after being stopped a week earlier and found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.11%, nearly 1½ times the legal limit in Minnesota. There were children in the vehicle with him, one being 2 years old, the criminal complaint noted.
Judge Jana Austad opted to put Reese on probation in lieu of sending him to jail for a year, according to court records.
Along with last year's drunken driving conviction, Reese's criminal history in Minnesota also includes another DWI conviction in 2020. He's also been convicted twice for driving without a license, twice for having no insurance and once for underage liquor consumption.
Reese's driving privileges have been revoked since June 2020 for various traffic violations, the state Department of Public Safety said Tuesday.
According to the Sheriff's Office:
Deputies and emergency medical responders arrived at the scene and found a car that rolled into a ditch. There were four men and one woman in the vehicle.
Butcher was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reese and two other men were taken to hospitals for treatment, and one man was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Law enforcement collected a blood sample from Reese to be tested for impairment from drugs or alcohol.
"Alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash," a Sheriff's Office statement read. Charges have yet to be filed.
