A family gathering Saturday in Brooklyn Park ended with a man shot dead and a suspect in custody, police said.

Officers were called to a residence on the 8400 block of Adair Avenue N. about 6:35 p.m. and arrived to find a "chaotic scene" and a man suffering from several gunshot wounds to the midsection, said Brooklyn Park police inspector Elliot Faust.

The victim, identified as Nichanon Kittikroekphon‚was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, where he later died, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Kittikroekphon, 34, of Coon Rapids died of multiple gunshot wounds, the Examiner's Office said.

Others at the gathering pinned down the gunman until officers arrived. The shooting suspect, a 32-year-old man, was arrested at the scene, Faust said.

Officers recovered a firearm used in the shooting at the residence, Faust said.

Investigators from Brooklyn Park and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office learned the gunman and Kittikroekphon had a "verbal exchange" before the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot Kittikroekphon at close range. The two men knew each other, Faust said.

The suspect remained in the Hennepin County jail Monday morning on probable cause murder. Charges have not been filed.

The Star Tribune generally does not name suspects until charges are filed.
