Chanhassen makes its strong first half hold up in victory over Spring Lake Park

After outlasting border rival Chaska by a point last week, Chanhassen was intent on not letting the euphoria of a big win overstay its welcome.

The Storm turned the page quickly, producing an efficient 28-14 win against Spring Lake Park on Friday at Chanhassen.

Chanhassen (3-0) deftly mixed run and pass on offense while jamming up the option rush attack of the Panthers (2-1).

"It's just really fun to see us execute at our capabilities after having a big game last week," Chanhassen coach Cullen Nelson said. "To respond this week was a big deal."

Chanhassen scored methodically on all three of its offensive possessions of the first half to forge a 21-7 lead at the break. Running back Maxwell Woods was past the 100-yard mark by halftime and finished with a game-high 126 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

"The O-line, I can't thank them enough," the 5-10, 165-pound senior said. "They're doing amazing this year. I cannot do anything without them. Our receivers made great plays and the quarterback threw great balls. Just an amazing effort from everyone."

Woods was trapped in the backfield before juking and jiving for his first touchdown from 6 yards in the first quarter. He used a burst of speed for a 7-yard score in the second quarter.

"I'd say I'm kind of an elusive back," Woods said. "I like to make some guys miss in the open field. I feel like most people have trouble bringing me down. I'm not necessarily a power back, but if I need to, I guess I got it, you know?"

Senior quarterback Grant Muffenbier beat the Panthers' 4-4 formation deep. Muffenbier finished 10-for-13 for 163 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. He flicked a 17-yard pass perfectly over Josh Och's shoulder for a 17-yard touchdown to put Chanhassen up three scores in the third quarter.

Chanhassen outgained Spring Lake Park 346-220.

Spring Lake Park senior quarterback Brayden Talso combined for 163 yards with more than 100 on the ground.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Muffenbier connected on passes of 36 and 46 yards. All 10 of his completions went for 8 or more yards.

"We've been building [chemistry] up all year," Muffenbier said of his receiving corps. "Some of those guys I was throwing to last year, too. I love those guys."
