Injury bug bites

A look at four prominent Twins or team prospects who've had their careers interrupted:

Joe Mauer

As Twins catcher from 2004 to '13, the former first overall draft pick started only 54.6 percent of games behind the plate (885 of 1,622), because of knee and sacroiliac injuries and, of course, bilateral leg weakness. He moved to first base this season but suffered a strained oblique.

Justin Morneau

A four-time All-Star and 2006 AL MVP, the first baseman's Twins career slid after a 2010 concussion. He played in only 150 games in 2010 and 2011 and was traded to the Pirates last August. He has rebounded with a strong 2014 season with Colorado.

Byron Buxton

The second overall draft pick of 2012 was the consensus top minor league prospect, but 2014 has been a lost season. He was limited to 31 games because of two wrist injuries. After being promoted to Class AA New Britain this week, he suffered a concussion in his first game.

Miguel Sano

The Dominican standout was the consensus top power-hitting prospect in the minor leagues entering this season. But right elbow pain resurfaced during spring training, and Sano underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in March. He is sitting out the 2014 season.
