Peter Carter, a top trial attorney in the Minneapolis law firm Dorsey & Whitney, this week was named chief legal officer for Delta Air Lines.
Carter will report to Delta CEO Richard Anderson, who was once a top executive with Northwest Airlines when it was a Dorsey client. Carter replaces Richard "Ben" Hirst, another former Northwest official, who is retiring.
"Peter's expertise as a business litigator and experience with global matters will serve Delta well," Anderson said in a statement.
Carter has been at Dorsey for nearly 23 years and once served as chairman of the firm's board. He currently is co-chair of Dorsey's securities litigation and enforcement practice group.
In a note to his colleagues at Dorsey, Carter said he took the job "to work with Richard Anderson and his team at an airline that is in the midst of transforming a global industry."
Carter is a University of Notre Dame graduate and a Milwaukee native who received his law degree at the University of Minnesota in 1991.
"I am very fortunate to have grown up as a lawyer at Dorsey," Carter said.
