Luther McCoy and Hayden Schwartz, a pair of defensive linemen who played sparingly in their Gophers careers, each announced Monday on the X social media platform that they're entering the transfer portal.
McCoy, 6-4 and 305 pounds, saw action in nine games in his Gophers career, including one this season. He is entering the portal as a graduate transfer and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
McCoy was a three-star recruit out of Creekside High School in St. Augustine, Fla., in 2021. He chose the Gophers over two other finalists, Baylor and Georgia Tech.
The move does not come a surprise, especially since McCoy participated in the Senior Walk during the Gophers' final home game on Nov. 23 against Penn State.
Schwartz, a 6-4, 250-pound three-star recruit from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., played in one game this season and two games over three seasons at Minnesota. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Schwartz originally committed to Nebraska in 2021 before switching to the Gophers just before signing day. His father, Bryan, was a linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The NCAA transfer portal officially opens next Monday, but players have been announcing their intentions ahead of time.
