Preview: The Gophers (2-0) passed their first real test of the season with Monday night's 86-74 win at Providence in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. They hadn't played a true road game against a high-major opponent that early in the season since beating Iowa State in 2007. There will be more tough games away from home in nonconference play, but Minnesota gets the comfort of playing the next three games at the Barn. Niagara (1-0) is another veteran team with its starting five back. The Purple Eagles are also coming off a big road win, downing St. Bonaventure 77-75.

Players to watch: No Gopher since NBA forward Kris Humphries has been able to score in the paint like Jordan Murphy this season. The junior is averaging 29 points and 14.5 rebounds, both best in the Big Ten. His 23-point, 14-rebound effort Monday helped to seal the win at Providence. Niagara guards Kahlil Dukes and Matt Scott combined for 130 three-pointers last season.

By the numbers: The Gophers had their first victory Monday against a Big East opponent on the road since an 83-67 win at Marquette in 1988, with guard Amir Coffey's father, Richard, on the team.
