The No. 10 Gophers volleyball team beat No. 20 Dayton in three sets in the opening match of the Golden Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla., on Friday, then lost to No. 19 Kansas State in five sets.
In the opener, the Gophers beat the Flyers 25-21, 25-21, 25-16, hitting .341 to Dayton's .066, and outblocking the Flyers, 13.0 to 8.0. Three Gophers had at least 10 kills: Katherine Harms had 13 kills in 29 attempts (.276), Tori Dixon led the team with a .562 hitting percentage and 11 kills, and Ashley Wittman had 12 kills in 21 attempts (.476).
In the second match, the Gophers fell to the Wildcats 13-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 15-7. Harms recorded a double-double, leading the Gophers with 17 kills and 13 digs.
The Gophers play Tulsa at 2 p.m. Saturday to close out the tournament.
Dziedzic named coach Joe Dziedzic, the former Minneapolis Edison and Gophers star who played 130 regular-season NHL games, was hired as the new head coach of the combined Minneapolis high school team.
Dziedzic was the head coach at St. Paul Academy the past two full seasons after taking over midway through the 2009-10 season. He complied a 24-38-5 record.
Minneapolis is a combined program of seven public schools: Edison, Roosevelt, South, North, Patrick Henry, Southwest and Washburn.
Etc. The No. 17 Gophers men's cross country team finished second behind No. 3-ranked BYU at the Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah. Andrew Larson paced the Gophers with a time of 20 minutes, 26.1 seconds in 11th place while Pieter Gagnon was one spot back at 20:26.3.
With the first nine finishers, the Gophers women's cross-country team recorded a perfect team score of 15 to win the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D. The Gophers were led by Molly Kayfes with a time of 17:15.82.
