Looking ahead
(10) Gophers vs. (2) Michigan State
Saturday in Des Moines
Round 2: The 10-seed Gophers (22-13) will try to win two NCAA tournament games in a season for the first time since advancing to the 1997 Final Four when they meet 2-seed Michigan State (29-6) Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Spartans, who were co-Big Ten regular season and conference tournament champions, defeated Minnesota in East Lansing 79-55 on Feb. 9. Nick Ward and Matt McQuaid combined for 40 points for MSU, while Minnesota's Amir Coffey, Dupree McBrayer and Jordan Murphy had just 17 points combined on 6-for-17 shooting. This is believed to be the earliest meeting between Big Ten teams in NCAA tournament history (previous Purdue vs. Indiana in 1980 Sweet 16).
