Before she's even actually been sworn into Congress, state Rep. Ilhan Omar is drawing attacks from national right-wing figures.

Omar, a Democrat elected earlier this month from the Fifth Congressional District of Minneapolis and surrounding cities, will become one of the first Muslim women in Congress when she takes office in early January.

Conservative media personality Laura Loomer, who had disrupted an Omar campaign event in Minneapolis in August, was banned last week from the social-media site Twitter for a tweet criticizing Omar, according to a report in NBC News. Loomer said she was banned for violating the site's terms of service against hateful conduct.

In August, Loomer was part of a group that accosted Omar and Michigan congressional candidate Rashida Tlaib at the event at the Holy Land Deli.

Omar was mocked by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh on his nationally syndicated show after she made headlines for her work on a new U.S. House rule that would allow members to wear religious headgear. Omar wears a hijab.

Omar also faced a false claim on social media that she had called for white men to be put in chains as slaves for not submitting to Islam. The fact-checking site PolitiFact rated the statement "Pants on Fire."
