An SUV driver avoided hitting a stalled car on a Twin Cities highway Friday before fatally hitting a man standing nearby, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The incident occurred about 6 a.m. on Hwy. 169 in Shakopee, said State Patrol Sgt. Troy Christianson.
That side of the highway remained closed for much of the morning commute, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
According to the patrol:
Nicole Lee Rogers, 45, of Jordan, was heading south on Hwy. 169 near Old Brickyard Road, and spotted a stalled car on the right shoulder.
Rogers "maneuvered to the left lane, [where] a pedestrian was standing in the left lane, and was struck" by the SUV, a patrol statement read.
The victim was identified as Firaol Abebe Mebratu, 25, of Marshall, Minn. The patrol has yet to say whether he was associated with the stalled car.
Rogers and her passenger were not hurt.
