A St. Paul man was run over and killed along an east-central Minnesota highway soon after he was left without a ride following a scuffle with a drunken relative, authorities said Monday.

Ryan C. Lockhart, 23, was struck about 8:20 p.m. Sunday by a car heading west on Hwy. 23, about a half-mile from Interstate 35 and about 3 miles south of Hinckley, according to the State Patrol.

Lockhart was taken to a Duluth hospital, where he died, the patrol added.

The car's driver, Delwayne H. Hahn, 71, of Stanchfield, Minn., was not hurt.

The events leading up to Lockhart's death began with him and a male relative drinking together at a nearby bar, the Pine County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the sheriff's office:

The man and his relative left the bar in a pickup truck after getting into a dispute. While in the pickup, the two resumed arguing. The pickup was stopped, the men got out and fought.

Lockhart's relative got back in the pickup and left, leaving Lockhart along the road.

Investigators found what appeared to be Lockhart's footprints leading from the site of the scuffle, traveling down a county road and onto Hwy. 23, where he was run over by Hahn.

Hahn remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, and no citations were issued.

Lockhart's relative, whose identity was not disclosed, was located at Saint Mary's Hospital in Duluth, where the State Patrol cited him for drunken driving.
