A man running across the Green Line light-rail tracks in St. Paul was fatally struck Monday evening.

The man and a friend were crossing the tracks on Syndicate Street, about a block east of the Hamline station, around 4:30 p.m. when the man was hit.

The friend made it across the tracks, transit authorities said.

Metro Transit spokes­person Howie Padilla said the victim, who has not been identified, died at the hospital.

Officials are investigating, Padilla said.

The incident caused significant delays on the line, and travelers had to use replacement buses for a portion of their commute.

The light-rail trains resumed running after a temporary shutdown.
