Several people ambushed a Minneapolis motorist late at night in an alley, shot him in the chest and drove off with his car.
The carjacking occurred about 11:25 p.m. Thursday in the 3900 block of 11th Avenue S., according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
The critically wounded victim, a man in his 20s, was given immediate medical attention before being taken by emergency medical responders to HCMC, police added.
The man's father said midday Friday that his son, 24 and from Brooklyn Center, was in critical condition.
Five suspects, male and female, fled the scene in the man's car and possibly a second vehicle, police said. No arrests have been announced.
Police statistics show that carjckings in Minneapolis fell by about 40% last year vs. the previous year. That decline has slowed to about 10% this year, which has seen about 250 carjackings so far.
Less than four hours later and about 2½ miles to the southeast of the earlier shooting, officers went to the 4500 block of Hiawatha Avenue S. on a report of gunfire that also involved a stolen vehicle, police said.
Officers arrived shortly before 4 a.m. Friday and found a woman inside the vehicle suffering from a critical gunshot wound, according to police. Emergency medical responders took her to HCMC, where her condition was not immediately known as of Friday afternoon.
As with the earlier shooting, no arrests have been announced in this case.
Police spokesman Trevor Folke said, "Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events of the two incidents, including whether or not they are related."
