Steve Hoag, a former All-America runner and Big Ten champion for the Gophers in the late 1960s, died Friday at his home in Shakopee at age 70.
He is probably best known for finishing second in the 1975 Boston Marathon to Bill Rodgers. His time was 2 hours, 11 minutes, 54 seconds.
At the U, Hoag placed third in the 10,000 meters in the NCAA meet in 1968, won the two-mile run in the Big Ten indoor meet in 1969 and was captain of the 1968 cross-country team which placed fourth in the NCAA meet.
Hoag was inducted into the Minnesota Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2000.
Later in life, he ran a number of running stores, including his own, Marathon Sports. He also was a high school coach at several schools.
