The last Friday in April officially is recognized as National Arbor Day. This year marks the 138th anniversary of the first Arbor Day, and we continue to mark it by reflecting on the importance of conservation, promoting the value of trees in our lives and renewing our commitment to tree planting and care.
Each time we plant a tree, we give to the world a new source of beauty, shade, oxygen and habitat for creatures of many sizes. Many trees provide us with food. We plant trees to celebrate our hope for the future.
Trees, powered by the sun's energy, are remarkable natural resources. Without trees, the world would be bleak and life as we know it impossible. They are especially admired in their natural forest settings. In our yards and city neighborhoods, trees can reduce the heat of summer and block the cold of winter. They absorb sound, decrease noise pollution and serve as screens for privacy.
