Classes at St. Paul Central High School were called off Wednesday due to a power outage, school officials said.

At 6:30 a.m., power at the school was restored, but by then word had spread too far to rescind the closing, said Toya Stewart Downey, a district spokeswoman.

Central was among 1,440 customers that lost power after a wire burned at 9:34 p.m. Tuesday. Power was restored at 10:25 p.m.

But to make permanent repairs, crews shut off power at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday for 17 customers, including the high school. Power to those customers was restored at 6:30 a.m., said Xcel Energy Inc. spokeswoman Mary Sandok.

The last day of classes in St. Paul is Monday.
