DULUTH — Private property owners in St. Louis County suffered nearly $12 million in damages during June's torrential rainfall, the county reported Tuesday.
Assessors of the largest Minnesota county visited more than 700 properties where damage was reported and inspected nearly 2,000 structures. Of those, nearly 400 are damaged enough for their owners to qualify for property tax relief.
"The June flood was devastating for so many families and business owners, and we want to make sure people receive any property tax relief for which they are eligible," Mary Garness, county director of public records and property valuation said in a news release.
Residents have until Friday to request inspections.
The Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) Monday also approved $2.5 million in economic recovery funding for businesses in Cook, the city most devastated by flooding. Water reached as high as 5 feet in some areas of downtown. A small chunk of the money is for "quick-start" grants of $25,000, and more than $2 million is for loans eligible for forgiveness for businesses that stay open for five years.
St. Louis, Lake, Itasca and Cook counties are among the 19 counties where residents can apply for federal aid for temporary housing, home repairs and low-interest loans to cover uninsured losses, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Tuesday.
