A fully loaded magazine of bullets was stolen from a St. Paul police commander's squad car while it was parked unlocked in a secure police garage.

The Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm magazine was sitting on the front passenger seat when it was taken on March 29 sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., according to a police report and Sgt. Paul Paulos, a police spokesman.

The magazine belonged to Cmdr. Kenneth Reed, Chief Thomas Smith's executive officer. The car was not locked, and the magazine was in the car because Reed planned to shoot later that day, Paulos said.

Reed noticed the magazine was gone when he went back to his squad, Paulos said. It's unclear who took the magazine, although Paulos said officers are not supposed to enter someone else's squad without permission. The incident will not result in disciplinary actions or review, he said.

The secure garage, accessible only to law enforcement, is located next door to police headquarters, and it's not unusual for squads to be left unlocked there, Paulos said. There were no guns left in the car.

"If you're leaving your gun in your car, there's a problem," Paulos said. "To leave a magazine, that's not much of a thing."
