Started career: As a commodities trainee at Cargill. Also kept stock charts for his captain in the U.S. Army.

Notable: In the 1950s, sang and played guitar in the band Steve Carl and the Jags; left investing in the mid-1960s to open the Alps, a bar on the 494 strip.

Founded Leuthold Weeden Capital Management in 1987; manages $3.5 billion.

In semi-retirement, he'll continue to write commentary, manage money for his family foundation and continue to serve on the board of Leuthold Weeden Capital Management and the mutual funds. He currently spends the summer in Maine growing potatoes.
