A suspect was in custody Friday night after shots were fired outside 3M Arena at Mariucci at the University of Minnesota just as people were leaving the graduation ceremony for Wayzata High School, authorities said.
According to the University of Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the shooting happened at about 8:20 p.m. An emergency alert sent out by the U advised people to stay away from the area, but authorities said late Friday there was no ongoing threat.
Paramedics took two shooting victims to HCMC in downtown Minneapolis, authorities said. U officials confirmed Saturday that the victims are two men, ages 49 and 19, both of whom were said to be in stable condition.
More details about the shooting, such as the suspect's identity and what motivated it, were unavailable Saturday.
Minneapolis police and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office were assisting U police with the investigation.
In a post on X, Gov. Tim Walz called news of the shooting "horrific" and said the state "stands ready to help in any way we can."
