Wolves coach Rick Adelman was back on the bench Wednesday night against Denver at Target Center after missing Monday's game and Tuesday's practice to be with his wife as she dealt with a health issue. Mary Kay Adelman was treated for seizures last season, a process that forced Adelman to miss 11 games.
"I really don't see any reason to talk about it," Adelman said. "I wasn't here. It's just something, my wife had a little problem and that is it."
Adelman did say his wife would be OK.
"We're just taking it day by day," he said. "It's fine. I just had to take care of it, and I planned on being here [Wednesday]. And it worked out that way, so it's a good time for the All-Star break, even though we're in Minnesota with the snow and cold."
Martin's goal
Wolves guard Kevin Martin will have his broken left thumb examined again in about 10 days, with the hope he will be cleared to play.
Martin was hurt in the final minute of the Wolves' loss in New Orleans on Feb. 7. Martin said a jump ball caromed from Ricky Rubio to Corey Brewer, then off his thumb. "It happened so fast," he said.
Martin will have the thumb looked at right before the team leaves for a five-game road trip, which begins Feb. 22 at New Orleans.
Breaking away
An informal poll in the Wolves locker room shows most of the players are poised to get out of town for the upcoming All-Star break. The team is off starting Thursday, with players expected to return Monday. The team will practice again Tuesday.
So where are they going? J.J. Barea is headed to his native Puerto Rico. "I'll have my feet in the sand all weekend," he said. Ronny Turiaf is going to his native Martinique. Luc Mbah a Moute is going "somewhere warm.'' Rubio is going to Los Angeles and Chase Budinger is going to Arizona, where he'll attend the Arizona-Arizona State game Friday night.
But at least one player is staying home. Center Nikola Pekovic has to stick around so he can get treatment on the bursitis in his right ankle; he was sore Wednesday and back in the protective walking boot before the game.
So, for the second consecutive year, Pekovic will go ice fishing with a friend. Last year he went to Lake Mille Lacs. This year he's going to Clearwater Lake, near Annandale.
"I hope he puts his foot in the water and ices it a little bit," Adelman said.
Have fun, but …
Adelman wants Kevin Love to have fun during the All-Star break. But he also wants Love, who is starting for the Western Conference, to come back rested. Can both goals be accomplished?
Love arrives in New Orleans on Thursday. He has practice and media availability Friday, followed by an NBA Cares community event that night. Saturday there is a practice, then the three-point shooting contest Saturday night. The game is Sunday.
"I think you should enjoy it when you're involved in it," Adelman said. "We don't play until Wednesday. That gives you an extra day."
