Mark Schuman

Schuman, Mark Mark Schuman, age 64, of Little Chute, WI passed away with his loving wife Amy at his side on October 9th after a year- long battle with leukemia. Mark was born on January 15, 1960, in Kohler, WI to Glen and Julie Schuman. Mark received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and his law degree from the University of WI, Madison. Most of Mark's professional life was spent in Minneapolis. He represented some of the biggest companies in the pharma world. His work involved breaking patents on formulary drugs in order for his clients to introduce generics to the market. Mark worked for Merchant & Gould where he not only practiced law, but also mentored many young aspiring attorneys. Mark's mentor, Alan Carlson, left Merchant & Gould to start another law firm. In Alan's words, "we were eager to have Mark and the other members of his pharma team join the firm, and we changed the name to Carlson, Caspers, Vandenburgh, Lindquist and Schuman to reflect Mark's importance to the firm." Mark and Amy met through EHarmony in June 2009. After dating long distance for three years, Amy left her job in Appleton, WI and moved to Minneapolis (March 2012). Mark and Amy enjoyed the Twin Citieswalking, biking, so many great friends and some treasured family too. Besides Minneapolis, Mark and Amy enjoyed their home in Door County, WI. When Mark retired in 2018, he and Amy sold the home in Minneapolis and established a residence in Clearwater, FL. Mark and Amy enjoyed traveling and saw so many beautiful places throughout the world. One trip was especially memorable. On November 11, 2011 (11-11-11), Mark proposed to Amy at the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Many trips to Rome would follow. Some other favorite trips included Burning Man in Black Rock City, NV, March in Valencia Spain, Norway (Northern Lights and Edvard Munch's "The Scream") and Thailand. Mark also enjoyed sailing and glass-blowing. In addition to Amy, Mark is survived by Amy's sons: Taylor DeBruin and Connor (Kalyn) DeBruin; and grandson, Jonah; his mother, Julie Schuman; brother, Paul; and brother, John (Miriam) and their children: Julia and Christian. He will also be greatly missed by Amy's siblings and their families: Pat (Peter) Litersky and their children, Claire (Brianna) Savoie; Pete (Sara) Litersky and their children: Max, Morgan, and Chase; Debbie (friend, Joe Vanden Elsen) and the late Steve Hartjes and their children, Mike (Jessie) and their children Macy, Callahan, and Hamilton; Nikki (Dylan) Esterling and their children, Natalie Campbell and Nathan; Rachel (Joe) Cabelka and their children, Lucas, Charlotte, and Nolan; Tim (Joanie) Hartjes and their children, Danielle (Rudy) Botz and their children, Laken and Rory; Brooke, Jesse, and Karly; Greg (Karen) Hartjes and their children, Madelyn, Eli and Owen; Gary Hartjes and his children, Preston and Alex; Beth (Steve) McAuley and their children, Sean, Tony, and Noah. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Glen Schuman; former wife, Mary Schuman; father and mother- in-law, James "Cobby" and Grace Hartjes; and brother-in-law, Steve Hartjes. A Memorial Service will be held for Mark on Thursday, October 24th, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. at Verkuilen- Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home, 101 Canal Street, Little Chute, WI 54140.
